影片同名漫画改编，讲述向往爵士乐的少年宫本大在音乐界闯荡的经历。 住在仙台的高中生宫本大（山田裕贵配音）深受爵士乐吸引，每天都独自在河边吹奏次中音萨克斯风。毕业后他来到东京，住进了高中同学玉田俊二（冈山天音配音）的公寓。某日，大在展演空间遇见同龄钢琴家・泽边雪祈（间宫祥太朗配音），并邀请他共组乐团，受大影响而开始打鼓的玉田也加入组成3人乐团“JASS”。连乐谱都看不懂，只是一心吹奏萨克斯风的大、从小就将一切献给爵士乐的雪祈、以及初学者玉田，以在日本最好的爵士乐具乐部表演并改变日本爵士乐风格为目标，尽全力投入在音乐活动之中。。“ON THE EDGE” reveals a rare theme for world cinema - female saber fencing.
