Kauffmann, who was the Danish ambassador to Washington in 1939 when World War II started and who declared himself to be the only true representative of a free Denmark in opposition to the Nazis。40年代逃荒到辽西山区的姑娘棉桃，不幸落入土匪刘八爷手中，棉桃逃跑的路上，被追逼无奈跳入河谷，铁匠水印发现后将她救回家中。四方游走的货郎与棉桃相遇，两人一见钟情，但为感谢水印的救命之恩，棉桃嫁给了水印。货郎伤心而去。刘八爷发现了棉桃，将她抓回关人刘府内。棉桃不从，将刘八爷刺伤，紧急时刻货郎救出棉桃，两人逃跑路上货郎被土匪击中，他向棉桃倾诉了心中的爱慕后离开了人世。。
