Based on a true story of the American Civil War, culminating at the Battle of New Market, May 1864. A group of teenage cadets sheltered from war at the Virginia Military Institute must confront the horrors of an adult world when they are called upon to defend the Shenandoah Valley. Leaving behind their youth, these cadets must decide what they are fighting for.。西南军区例行军演，“蓝军”不按常规出牌战胜了“红军”，震动了军区上下，首长决定搞一次不事先预定胜负也不设导演部，直接凭实力决定胜负的真实军演。很快，上次演习“违规”的C师仍扮演蓝军，“红军”则由上次失败的A师继续担当。演习开始后，尽管A师是具有传统历史经验的老部队，但由于作战观念落后，又一次输给了蓝军。军区领导意识到，在现代战争中，A师这样的老部队尽管传统悠久、历久弥坚，但毕竟已不符合现代战争实战要求，必须剥离部门首长固有的传统陈旧观念，大胆地进行改革。军区和集团军首长即着手行动，从司政后主官人员编制，到作战观念改变，都进行了大换血......。
